New & Noteworthy - Le Cheval Fou: An American Hermitage - This tantalizing wine is an authentic Hermitage, produced in cooperation with legendary winemaker Michel Chapoutier. Hermitage, at just over 300 acres, is not only one of the smallest appellations in the region, but would arguably also qualify as a Premier Cru, if the Rhône had an official system of classification. While its roots, quite literally, are French, Le Cheval Fou ($125 per bottle, $750 per six-pack) exhibits an American exuberance: Its Gallic minerality and beefy tannins support a flavorful framework of dark berry, cedarwood, smoked meat, cinnamon, and other earthy spices.

91 points -Inky ruby. Textbook syrah aromas suggest dark cherry, plum, olive and licorice, with a subtle floral undertone. Light on its feet, with silky dark berry flavors, gentle tannins and slow-building peppery spice qualities. Turns brighter on the finish, leaving a suave trail of red fruits behind. This is a joint venture between American John Schwartz (owner of Amuse Bouche and PharaohMoans) and Michel Chapoutier. (Shaw-Ross Imports, Miami, FL)

"....Le Cheval Fou 2005 is surprisingly lean and approachable for a Hermitage, with all the classic aromas or brown spice and pepper."
- Jon Bonne, Wine Editor San Francisco Chronicle
